MEET KHANYI MAGUBANE
Khanyi Magubane is a seasoned Radio Broadcaster, TV and Film Producer, Director, Entrepreneur and Speaker/MC with 23 years media experience.
She has cut her teeth across the various media platforms of Radio/TV/Online and Print and has been widely recognised for her work in broadcast media.
A trained journalist by profession, she is armed with a BA (Communication) and BA (Hons) Journalism both from RAU (now the University of Johannesburg).
As a journalist, she begun her career at Talk Radio 702 in 2000 where she rose up the ranks to specialist high court reporter. She then moved to YFM in October 2003, where she was an Afternoon and Breakfast drive-time news anchor.
In 2006 she moved to the SABC where she joined SAfm where over a period of 13 years she presented various talk shows on the station. and worked as a current affairs show producer and later as a radio broadcaster, a position she held for 13 years.
In addition to her broadcast work, Magubane is a sought-after political commentator on TV, Print and Radio. She has lent her voice to top political and current affairs discussions on national and international platforms including Newzroom Afrika, Morning Live, SABC 404, ENCA, Channel Africa, Metro FM, SAfm, Power FM, uKhozi FM, uMhlobo FM, Deutsche Welle (Germany) and New York Times (USA), Sputnik News (Russia).
Khanyi has produced extensively for television across formats from socio-political documentaries, Talk Shows and made-for-tv films.
Her career highlights as a producer include producing the critically acclaimed six – part socio – political documentary series ‘Why Are We So Angry’ in 2012, which was broadcast on SABC 1 and has since been broadcast across all SABC channels.
In 2014 she followed up with ‘Making Cents’ a four-part socio – economic documentary series on the economic inequalities in Africa. Magubane has also produced. In 2015 she was the executive producer of a 26 episode primetime talk show on SABC 2 entitled Visionaries Lounge.
The show profiled self-made South Africans with noteworthy achievements. The season aired until April 2016. In 2023 was chosen as one of 10 filmmakers to participate in the Unsung Heroes film, where she produced a short film entitled ‘A Woman of Substance’ on the life of Beauty Selela, a nurse, midwife and prolific political figure from Boipatong in the Vaal.
As a screen writer, Magubane is behind some of the country’s top TV shows include The Wife Season 3 and Isitha – The Enemy currently airing on Etv Monday – Friday at 9:30pm.
In 2014, Magubane was the recipient of the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a legacy leadership program of former US President Barack Obama.
She was selected as one of 500 young African leaders from over 50,000 applicants from the whole of Africa to attend a six week Fellowship in the United States.
In 2013, Magubane was recognised as one of Mail &Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans in the field of Film and Media for her contribution in the field.
A trained public speaker, Magubane is also an experienced Programme Director and panel facilitator for conferences and special events. She has experience with both corporate and entertainment events.
